Canoa Hills Closure

GVR has an opportunity to secure a contractor to complete a number of renovation tasks at the Canoa Hills Center. Built in 1990, some areas of this center are overdue for updating. Among other tasks, contractors and facilities staff will tackle the following:

  • The lobby restrooms and both locker rooms will be renovated
    • Men can look forward to individual shower stalls
    • The red lockers will be repurposed in the new Glass Arts Studio
  • New flooring will be installed in the lobby and hallways
  • The pool deck will be resurfaced
  • Much of the interior will get a fresh coat of paint
  • A surprise or two

IMPORTANT DATES:

Tuesday, June 13: The auditorium and adjacent hallway will close for annual floor refinishing.

Monday, June 19: Most of the building will close, including the auditorium, the lobby, the fitness center, Customer Service and RSA offices, the Mesquite room and adjacent breezeway.

  • Because the Las Campanas pool will be closed for deck maintenance until June 24, the Canoa Hills pool, spa, and locker rooms will remain accessible via the east pool gate. Locker rooms will only be accessible from the pool deck.

Saturday, June 24: The pool deck and locker rooms will close.

After this date and until project completion, only the tennis and bocce courts will remain available to members.

  • A porta-potty will be located in the vicinity of the sports courts.
  • Tennis and bocce players, please plan to park only on the west side of the building near the courts

Depending on how the work progresses, we hope to throw a reveal party in September.

Classes and club activities will be moving to various locations. Recreation staff are prioritizing communication with club leaders and instructors. Some disruption is inevitable, but every effort is being made to accommodate clubs and classes in their temporary homes so they experience the least disruption possible.

Q&A

Question: How will I know where my club is meeting?
Answer: Your club leaders will contact you.

Question: How will I know where my class is meeting?
Answer: GVR staff will contact you.

Question: Will our schedules stay the same?
Answer: To the greatest extent staff can manage, yes.

Question: Will we need to move around from location to location through the summer?
Answer: We are working hard to prevent this. Staff’s top priority in making relocation plans is to find a temporary home your class or club can rely on until Canoa Hills reopens. Again, we may not find perfect solutions in every case, but we’ll get as close to perfect as we can.

Question: When will the new fitness center open at Desert Hills?
Answer: When the A/C unit arrives. We are preparing for a July opening, but we haven’t set a date. Meanwhile, unique equipment such as the Assault Air Bike at Canoa Hills will be relocated to the existing Desert Hills fitness center.

Question: Why close the whole center?
Answer: First, working with a single general contractor for multiple projects saves money–one site supervisor can oversee multiple crews and materials can often be ordered in discount quantities. Second, given the scope of the work that will be done, the safety of members trying to navigate around projects could be a concern.

Question: How is this project being paid for?
Answer: GVR maintains a Maintenance, Repair, and Replacement (MRR) fund and schedule. Money has already been allocated for these projects. We have an opportunity now to complete them all at once, rather than navigating through a series of partial closures over the next year.

Question: What color will the new tile be?
Answer: Anything but Pepto Pink.
